WELL CARE?

It has been declared by the Secretary of Health and Human Services that free contraceptives are critical in America so women can have “Well Care”. Being a good citizen I decided to check the FDA and read how healthy these free products can make our women. Here are some of the side effects listed on that site.

“• Irregular periods.
• Light spotting or bleeding between periods.
• Weight gain.
• Breast tenderness.
• You may have bone loss if you get the shot for more than 2 years.
• Breast tenderness.
• Headaches.
• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, and headache
• Cramps and irregular bleeding
• Tear in the uterus or cervix.
• Pain
* Bleeding
* Infection or other complications after surgery
* Ectopic (tubal) pregnancy
• Acne, weight gain, cysts of the ovaries, mood changes, depression, hair loss, headache, upset stomach, dizziness, lower interest in sexual activity, sore breasts, and changes in your periods

This was a sample from several different approved drugs. Does it make you wonder – “Is this really about WELL CARE?”. Up until now, well care has always been a test done to determine if there are problems that need to be treated or further tested. Now we have added prescriptions and surgical procedures (sterilizations) to the definition of well care.

It has always been accepted that any medical procedure involving risk to the patient is only administered to resolve a medical problem, to cure a disease, or save a life.

I was reading the medical oath as written by Hippocrates. This is often referred to as the Hippocratic Oath and for years was recited by physicians. I think today it must be considered unacceptable and maybe even dangerous. It says:
“I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.
I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a plan; and similarly I will not give a woman a pessary to cause an abortion.
But I will preserve the purity of my life and my arts.”

It would be interesting to randomly ask your friends what medical procedures would be deemed as “well care”. If you hear:
Pap smears, mammograms, prostate exams, colonoscopies that would be normal. What is amazing is that ALL of these procedures were covered for free PRIOR to the recent mandate.

I suppose people can just say that contraceptives should be free of charge but I can not accept that it is medical well care. If so what is the disease being prevented. Is a baby now considered a disease in America?

There is the claim that contraceptives will save money rather than paying for maternity charges. That changes the argument. Now it is just to find the cheapest solutions. If that is the argument then free contraceptives is a move to save money on our Health Care. This makes me wonder what decisions are in our future for our elderly and disabled loved ones. These people are running up the largest bills in our healthcare system. Will a new “cost saving” measure for these people also be called well care?

We take a look at a perfectly healthy woman and tell her that she will have well care by taking chemicals or increased dosages of estrogen. (Wasn’t it estrogen used in menopause treatment that was connected to increased breast cancer)? I guess chemical dependence doesn’t just come from illegal drug dealers.

The new definition of “well care” says that these side effects are worth the risk of becoming pregnant. But to call it well care means we have to accept that pregnancy is a medical condition that needs to be cured. It is now a disease. What has changed here: the meaning of “well care”, the meaning of “pregnant” or both?
